United States Army Corps of Engineers
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) is working around the clock with its contractor partners to restore the damaged sections of the hurricane protection system to their authorized design height prior to the 2006 hurricane season. The Corps is working to make the New Orleans levee system better and stronger than ever before.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers established Task Force Hope immediately after Hurricane Katrina hit the Louisiana and Mississippi coasts. Task Force Hope’s main mission is to manage the work on levees and floodwalls, debris removal and all emergency response efforts that Federal Emergency Management Agency requested the Corps to carry out. Task Force Hope oversees the efforts of Task Force Guardian and Recovery Field Offices in Louisiana and Mississippi. Task Force Guardian is repairing damages to the Greater New Orleans federal hurricane and flood protection system resulting from Hurricane Katrina, restoring the system to pre-storm levels of protection by June 1, 2006.

National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration
The U.S. Small Business Administration's National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has directly assisted in the clean up of over eight million gallons of spilled oil in the Gulf of Mexico. NOAA is also working with the States, Gulf of Mexico Fisheries Management Council, other federal agencies and industry to address fishing infrastructure and planning issues that will bring back a sustainable fishing industry in the Gulf. This includes providing critical information for clearing Gulf waterways that have been paralyzed in at least 20 ports. In addition, NOAA is providing water level measurements and information critical to establishing baseline vertical reference systems. Accurate tidal and geodetic data is essential to determining levee heights for performance assessment and future design.

U.S. Department of Energy
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is working to encourage cost-effective, durable and energy-efficient building reconstruction in the wake of recent hurricanes in the Gulf Coast region. The application of proven building technologies and designs can make a long-term difference in areas vulnerable to natural disasters, resulting in safer, healthier, more economically viable communities that are less susceptible to disaster.
