D1 Automotive/Coastal Solutions
Dr. Christie Daniels, a managing partner of D1 Automotive Sales and Service, wanted to contribute to the Gulf Coast rebuilding and recovery efforts by hauling FEMA trailers to eligible families in the areas devastated by Hurricane Katrina. Dr. Daniels had unsuccessfully tried to get information from a prime contractor hauling FEMA trailers. However, she called HCIC after searching the Internet for hurricane contract information.
An HCIC representative advised Dr. Daniels to: (i) register her business with Dunn and Bradstreet to obtain a business identification number; (ii) register her business in the Central Contractor Registration database to enable her to do business with the Federal government; and (iii) to search FedBizOpps for opportunities.
Subsequently, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers contacted Dr. Daniels and advised her of small business set-aside opportunities to rebuild the Gulf Coast. After hearing the good news, Dr. Daniels decided to partner with Coastal Solutions, a local Mississippi company, and bid on the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers solicitation entitled “Car and Vessel Hauling, Hurricane Katrina Recovery, Task Force Hope- Mississippi”. D1 Automotive/Coastal Solutions (a joint venture) was awarded a Car and Vessel Hauling contract with an estimated value of approximately $1.6 million.

This contract award demonstrated that small businesses can successfully develop competitive winning proposals, that satisfy Federal government contract requirements. Also, this contract benefits local Mississippi subcontractors in the areas devastated by Hurricane Katrina. "Based upon the current success, our companies look forward to continued accomplishments in government contracting and a healthy, profitable future," says Dr. Daniels. Finally, without the support of the Hurricane Contracting Information Center (HCIC), “I am not sure if our company would have won this contract” according to Dr. Daniels.
St. Claude Hardware
After 16 years of operating a viable hardware supply business in the Lower Ninth Ward, St. Claude Hardware was forced out by the floodwaters from Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. By the middle of September we secured borrow space, a phone line and a delivery truck anxious to be part of rebuilding not only our business but the beautiful City of New Orleans. With HCIC assistance in providing vital information to companies like mine, we have been successful in establishing a strong business relationship with one of the prime contractors, (Fluor Enterprise, Inc.), in this area as a materials supplier. Through it’s only a beginning, we have already doubled our staff, we have proven that we can compete against larger companies and we feel we are becoming an asset to the re-growth of our City. Cecilia Sogin, a small business owner in the Lower 9th Ward of New Orleans.
A-BC Computer Solutions
Jason Brady, President of A-BC Computer Solutions wrote a letter to President George W. Bush praising the HCIC website and staff. This is woman-owned, small business providing IT services and computer hardware to Government agencies.
Quotes from the letter: “The [HCIC] website is extremely well organized and full of useful information…. We are extremely pleased with the courteous and rapid response to our inquiries. We were also most impressed with the knowledge and helpfulness of the contracting representatives staffing the phone service. In our opinion, this website and phone service would be outstanding tools for those companies that wish to participate in hurricane related federal contacting opportunities.”
